Alex, good post. New invention sometimes cannot be accepted at the very beginning. Like Ford said: If you ask people what is a better tranportation tool. They always reply "a faster horse".
We cannot always say that new invention will definitely change others' life immediatly, though we truely believe in the new product or new method. The acceptance relates to so many other things rather than the new invention itself.

In China, "micro innovation" was a popular word last year. It reflects the reality that chinese net cititzen cannot accept "c2c(copy to china, especially point to copy american internet procuts, like twitte, facebook)" product. Relatively speaking, chinese net citizen is not mature as american. Though the copied product is fashionable and will improve the efficiency, still lots of net citizen has no idea about how to use it and where to go. May be in 5 year, copied products will be popular, but not for the time being.

Because of that, some "micro innovation" products are popular exceptionally. So some chinese young starups are struggling balancing between "superhot products in the worldwidet" and "local acceptance".

Well, I'm not sure what, exactly, they used. This shop uses "OEM parts" so I suspect they'd use the Bosch parts.

Whatever they did, though, it's like having a new car. Between the new plugs, coils and front pads/rotors -- but especially their alignment rack -- the car just drives great.

I wish I had my summer tires on instead of the Winter run-flats. They're noiser than the summer tires. But it's New England after all, and I have no idea when we'll next get whacked with snow.

I completely agree with you that T-Mobile has a deal with the devil going on with WiFi calling. They'd probably love to hate it, but since they have a poor network with frequencies that cannot penetrate buildings, they have to have something to offer. But that doesn't mean they have to love it.

When I first got my G2's, the WiFi app refused to work on all four of them in any hotspot we tried. T-Mobile's response? It varied from "it must be you" to "what's WiFi?"

Cell companies are evil -- and shipping an app with so much promise that under-delivers is just another proof point of their evil.

Even after enabling SIP ALG on my Netgear WNR2000v2, calls are still very choppy. I'm on a Comcast Blast Extra service (up to 25Mbps down/1Mbps up). Even when I'm only getting 512Kbps up, it should be more than adequate bandwidth.

The choppiness is mostly with the incoming calls though. I think if T-Mobile can't fix this feature they should stop marketing it.

It's a real shame, ain't it that T-Mobile hasn't been able to resolve this in such a long time. It's burns me up that someone in T-Mobile knows how to fix this -- but they just can't admit they have a problem.

Since I've written this, I've changed phones (from a G2 to a Sensation 4G). The new phone has an updated WiFi dialing app that only rarely produces this error. So, they're getting better. Maybe it's a plot to get us all to upgrade three or four times (and extend our contracts for the next decade).

You wouldn't believe the traffic this post gets from frustrated people looking for an answer. Proof positive that cell companies are evil.

I was elated when I found this. I have Verizon FIOS with an actiontec router in a basement and was hoping this would fix my wifi calling issue. this has only happened on two days, and it usually resolves itself, but this time it didn't resolve itself.

Unfortunately, this didn't resolve it either. Same error. T-Mobile is clueless. :(

I never forgot what my fourth grade teacher Mrs. Abel said. She was correcting another kid's spelling on friend.
She said to him, "always remember the easiest way to remember how was that you just had to say to yourself it's fri - end. Key to it was you had friends to the end."
We're friends to the end and it was like there was never a lapse in our time together cause it was like our conversations had picked up from the day before.
We all were busy living life as we made other plans.
But the point suite of Myles Standish Hall is back. We just can't remember that other guy.
Love you guys!!

Making DPU accountable? After writing such a brilliant, interesting and serious article, it is nice to see you end it with humour.

Ann Berwick was appointed Chair of the Department of Public Utilities by Governor Deval Patrick in June, 2010. Looking at her background, she is a lawyer. What steps could she possibly take to influence National Grid? The answer: nothing.

It seems that anyone who has wored with any other CMS and comes into Drupal land suffers because they know there are more intuitive and friendlier ways of doing things. I think if you have never used a CMS before it is better because you have nothing to compare it to.

Drupal falls into this weird place where highly technical users love it, programmers hate it and ordinary people just stare at the screen wondering what the ... they are looking at.

From a training perspective, I can tell you it takes 2x longer to train a client to use Drupal than Wordpress.

Good luck with the new driver. Not only are the driving lessons expensive, wait until you get your first car insurance bill with the new driver included.

The cemetery was also used for my young drivers. It was interesting to see which side of the road they decided to drive on when there were no lines in the road. Let's just say that it was instructive.

Excellent. My dad used to let me drive around the local cemetery in his VW Rabbit when I was 13. He sponsored me as I had my permit. Once I got my license, he never let me drive his car again. Hmph.

You aren't alone about being shocked about the cost of driver's ed. I drove my a driving school in Norwood yesterday, and I was shocked when the sign said: 'Only $599.' Now I know they mean "only" when they said it.

Congratulations.

I'm sure it would be even more comfortable to use a desktop with a nice 24" monitor and a true full-sized keyboard. Or maybe your fingers yearn for the crunch of a real IBM PC-AT keyboard, with number pad of course? Why stop there, how about a nice Selectric II?

I kid. A good laptop is an amazing all-around tool, and a real keyboard is a must for serious business. Tablets are good for consuming but not so much for creating information. Phones are a poor compromise for both. If I had a nickel for every no-value-added, three-word-long, typo-ridden, dashed-off-with-no-thought-or-research message from the blackberry of somebody too busy to think, I could buy an iPad.

I believe (and hope) this case is still active. But I have no idea how it's going. The NY AG doesn't return calls or emails asking for updates. Let's hope that the inertia that legal cases have keeps this going.

I am working on a Powerpoint presentation for a

(insurance-companies-demonstrate-greed-once-again.jpg)

It's a great image that says a lot, and, as I said, I would looooove to use it.

Where would I get permission for use of that image? The presentation
would be posted on the university department's website.

Thank you,

Hi, Tim,

It's not that the Acela trip was bad -- it was that the people who work for Amtrak have such poor attitudes, I worked for a freight railroad once that had a contract to run commuter service around Boston once. We could never get people working on the commuter service to think much about customer service -- basic things like saying, "thank you" to passengers when they bought tickets,. There's a long tradition of sour relations between labor and management on US railroads...and for some reason this persists.

As a railway Conductor in the UK, I would say do not judge the whole company or rail system on one journey. Not everyone is perfect, you might have a totally different experience next time.

The most interesting part about the whole Government Motors initiative is the voice of the common man. When the proposal for the US Government to finance GM was made, voters raised their voices against this "knowing" full well we taxpayers would never see the money again. Yet, our elected representatives who apparently know more than the common man voted in favor of the bailout. As a matter of fact, forced the bailout money onto all organizations - even the ones who didn't need or want it - so it didn't appear that only a few large companies were in trouble.

Now we are at the point in time were speculation is being made public by analysts stating that the automakers will never be able to repay the taxpayers. Where is the public outcry now? Why isn't there more noise being made and why are elected officials being recalled for taking such a poor action?

I hear you...the FINRA process is designed to make certain that you lose all over again. My hopes are that Congress will outlaw forced arbitration agreements. There's talk of this with respect to cell phone contracts, which gets more attention than brokerage arbitration agreements, but maybe we'll get to throw out two bad babies with the arbitration bath water.

I feel your pain - we've been in the same situation with Ameriprise. Our state regulator has no interest in helping out and there doesn't seem to be any hope of a big settlement for us. We're now left to the mercy of a FINRA arbitration which we have absolutely no faith in. Meanwhile the legal fees just keep stacking up. It's a nightmare.

Hey Alex. Thanks for "thinking aloud" about us and our video. We're all about breaking the mold here at Currensee and putting it out there (no pun intended.) You stated it perfectly in your post and it's really at the heart of who Currensee is and how we are changing the game. Why does marketing always have to go the same-old value prop route in the same-old way? I say, change it up. Think about what's going to connect with your audience and, for god's sake, have some fun! We hope people enjoy it. Trader or not, who doesn't love a fabulous booty?

Good luck with the writing block.

Thanks for commenting. I have to say that I am less interested in the politics of the whaling dispute than I am in the manipulation and apparently cynical exploitation of the volunteers on the "Steve Irwin."

In the US -- as a lead-up to the launch of a new series next week -- Animal Planet has been re-running the last season. I've been scanning these...and I wouldn't change a word of my original post about Watson, the Sea Shepherds and "Whale Wars."

The beauty of Whale Wars is it allows donors to actually see what they've been supporting. For years the only measure of the Sea Shepherds were their press releases and propaganda...now we see Paul Watson and his organization for what they really are...social misfit who convince others to fund their lifestyle. The Japanese whaling industry couldn't have cast and written a better series to make THEM look good.

Good idea. Human necessity and blue language always seem to work. I kid you not, a very distant acquaintance asked me Wednesday night how I got the word "shit" through the RSS feed. I don't think he liked it, but there you go. It worked. He read my post about nothing. And who am I to defy the logic of "bad language" as a blog accelerant?

Sorry to hear you're low on bile, are you mellowing out in your old age? I, for one, am happy to see you back on the blog, but then any reader of limeduck can tell you I've never had much of a problem with phoning in a blog post now and again to keep things looking lively. A quick photo or random link usually fills the bill nicely. Welcome back to fizzy drinks, too.

Typical. It is time to get rid of TIAA-CREF from the American retirement investment landscape. We need to get busy and vote on TIAA-CREF with our feet by: a) stopping our own contributions to this idiot organization, b) stopping our colleagues from giving additional contributions and c) convincing our non-profits to eliminate them from their options lists.
I first became in involved with TIAA-CREF in 1977. Looking back, it turned out to be a dismal day. How dismal only became apparent during the past decade or so as I approached retirement!
TIAA has never had a useful program for tracking investment returns and paying out lumpsums. Once they've got your money, you are absolutely out of luck. It will be annuitized on a mysterious schedule that favors them, and leaves you sipping gruel. There is no way to track the performance of any asset allocation you may choose in the annuity program. The only thing you can be certain of with TIAA-CREF is that your money will underperform any other way to invest your retirement contributions you can imagine. This explains why TIAA-CREF has no true lumpsum program. If they had one, everyone would use it!
Today, with all the options available, any non-profit employee who gives these turkeys even a single additional penny of their retirement contributions is nuts, no spell that NUTS. If you have friends who are using them, get them to stop NOW. Let's vote with our feet.
If your non-profit is still using these jerks as one of their options, get them to at least STOP (and move their 403b programs to Fidelity [not AIG!!], and be a hero to your friends by keeping them from getting screwed. It is also a benefit to your non-profit, because their precious funds will magically start doing more, instead of less good.

Hi, Todd.

Thanks for worrying about my employment status, which is just fine. (-:

I didn't set out to help you (or anyone else) evaluate RH vs. 3DVIA Composer. I don't have a dog in that hunt.

I am expressing my opinion -- on my blog -- about a company that is both derivative and drifting. You don't have to read it...you don't have to consider it.

You want Right Hemisphere? Help yourself. No skin off my back. But there's one thing you should consider: what I say about imitation is a valuable clue about what using their software might be like.

All software is intangible (though I suspect you are trying to make it less so in your evaluation). How often do evaluators get an inside look at the competitive dynamics between alternatives? That's a more reliable metric than feature checklists, IMHO.

For the record, I am not "bitter and angry." I just think their blog is terrible. And if they don't like the feedback, then they don't belong in the blogosphere.

Good luck to you.

I'm surprised that you couldn't come up with a better commentary than this, especially being unemployed. I love the internet and all it offers, until I read something like this and realize: anyone with some time on their hands, a new dictionary and a chemical imbalance can write a blog.

I am not a decision maker, just a grunt on an evaluation team that is looking at both Right Hemisphere and Seemage. Both have great stories and good products, but biased rants with no substance do not help me and the rest of our team evaluate software. You seem like a somewhat intelligent person, and can't help but think you could come up with some concrete pros and cons for the public to digest.

My summation of this article....boring, bitter and angry. You must be struggling on those unemployment checks...whoever you are.

While most FiOS TV customers aren't served by the ATM network architecture you describe, we don't currently support multiple streams on HD VOD in any of our markets. Keep in mind that this limitation affects only HD VOD – FiOS TV supports multiple simultaneous streams for our HD Local and National programming in all markets. We continue to enhance the service and expect to support more than one stream for HD VOD in the future.

Exactly! I think in NA GM still thinks luxury buyers have never seen an Audi, MB or BMW interior. Or, worse, that buyers have never been to Europe and driven an Opel. Even the interiors in the Saturns that are based on Opels but built here are crappy.

I got to this page thanks to my friend Robin Capper, who has already commented. This is worrying because GM has the capability from its other units (e.g. Opel, which does pretty good interiors now) and yet it seems it does not coordinate its knowledge across the corporation. The Japanese get this part right, too.

Exactly. "Close" doesn't cut it at the prices GM is asking for these cars. They aren't value-priced. The CTS I test drove had $15K of options on it. You could get a nicely equipped 5 Series (OK, a 528i not a 535i) or an A6 for that. And, even when the New England winter, traffic and parking-lot door-dingers have turned the outside of that car into an embarrassment, you'd still have a gorgeous interior to enjoy.

I recently saw the new Caddys in Vegas. While better they are nowhere near the BMW/Audi standards they claim, and must compete with.

A jittery center button is lousy, but this - http://www.engadget.com/2007/09/12/20-inch-imac-shipping-with-janky-lcds/ - is fantastically awful. Apple is shipping computers with 18-bit color panels in them, instead of 24-bit ones. (That means 6 bits per RGB channel, not 8, or for B&W nuts like me, 64 grays instead of 256!) That's not a QA glitch, that's a conscious decision to downgrade a component and hope that nobody notices or cares. Caveat emptor and all, but if there's one thing you expect from a mac, it's great graphics.

Caveat emptor and all, but if there’s one thing you expect from a mac, it’s great graphics.

Hi, Dave.

It wasn't so much their recent price problems with their customers that got me...it was that this was a bug QA either could have or should have caught and which they shouldn't have shipped with.

More than just screwing early adopters on price, Apple has now moved on to screwing them on the actual product content and function as well.

Hey Alex,

So they are cruising along merrily, they still come out with great products. Like you, I recently stopped into a Cingular store to check out the iPhone and fell in love immediately! As soon as I can convince myself that it can synchronize with outlook effectively, I plan to purchase one. --- Perhaps I should wait a few weeks though to see if the price drops another $200 ---

Yeah, Apple really needs to release an ipod that doesn't stutter while you rapidly press the centre button. The world is crying out for this feature but Apple is resting on their laurels.

Actually, Lorelle, I have to strongly disagree with you about reCAPTCHA. Yes, 99.9% of all captchas are useless, but reCAPTCHA actually works. I've used it on PT for about three weeks and no spam comments have entered moderation. I'm going to turn Akismet off.

I know the guys behind reCAPTCHA and they are a great bunch. It is a very sophisticated system and it does actually work. Annoying, perhaps, but not useless.

It's the only anti-spam plugin I know that actually does what it says it will. If you want, email me and I'll put you in touch with them, they can explain it better than I.

Why would anyone tell you that you are an idiot. Except for the font inside of the comment box (ickie), your font is easy to read and you make sense when you write - which is most important.

Of course, you are brilliant. You are writing about me.

HA! You can choke on that ridiculous bad joke later.

Yes, I have a lot of content, but you're bringing up a couple of different issues. Categorization helps to break the amount into like groups, but too many categories overwhelms as well. It would be nicer if the built-in search on WordPress blogs was improved, that's for sure. Still, your categories might not really describe what your blog is 1) about, 2) feature search terms, and 3) create a clear expectation of what is in each category.

The other issue comes with presentation of content. You know that "signature" on my blog posts. It's unwittingly become a brand, but I created it as the WordPress Theme I was using made each post on the multi-post page views, like the front page, categories, and search results, all look like one big long, never-ending page. There was no break between posts nor dates. So I put a graphic in, but that didn't do the job.

I needed something that said "post over - next post begins", and what more natural "symbol" of the end of a written letter than a signature. I added it manually, people liked it, and it broke up the long stream of content.

Breaking up content within your posts can easily be done with headings. So there are many ways to format your content without it appearing to be overwhelming to the reader.

And don't forget, there are two opinions on your blog's design and structure. You and your readers. The two can be vastly different. Your readers may not mind the things that make you crazy on your blog. An there may be things, like the annoying and useless CAPTCHA below the comment form, that makes your readers absolutely nuts but you are in love with it.

Go with what your spirit says and let the rest happen, but learn how to do better if you want, by learning from the best.

And thanks for being smart enough not to steal from me. That makes you triple smart. :D

Alex and I sampled the iPhone at the Burlington Mall Apple store after lunch today. We gave the Apple disciple, I mean footsoldier, I mean store employee, a friendly hard time, but the iPhone did some impressive tricks, elegantly playing a quicktime movie right from Safari. We agreed that it was pretty darn cool, especially the human interaction engineering, but not nearly cool enough to entice either of us to bed down with CingularT&TWirelessOne for any length of time.

Hi Alex,

Blogging is more than a sub-culture, especially for those of us with solid roots in technology. It appears that blogging is taking off with the editors of most publications, VCs and those of us willing to engage in free form communication.

I thank you for introducing me to the idea of a blog and its value to a new and growing business and hope that many more realize the value of the same.

Hmmm. According to that report, buyers of failing domestic nameplates favor country music, while the seemingly unstoppable legions of Toyota buyers listen to talk radio.

I'm not sure what the Hell that means, but it's the best food for thought I've had in quite some time.

Thanks.

[...] For some readers of this blog, this may seem more than a little esoteric. (Personally, I think this stuff is more interesting than a new 50" Hi-def plasma display…but still slightly less interesting than a 300hp BMW.) [...]

Ridicule? That of which I know nothing?
By the way, Ms. Kendall was hot, in the subjunctive, nominative, adverbial, antecedent clause case. She had great verbs, if you catch my drfit? Anyway, that's why I was paying attention while you were daydreaming about cascading style sheets. Which explains why you now must visit this site for her make-up exams. But making up, as Sedaka said... remember him... third row, back of the class, weird looking dude, always humming... well... enjoy your sessions with Grammar Girl. Better late than never!

Sounds like the pseudo-intellectual ramblings of a disgraced executive wannabe who was summarily dismissed after pissing off a record number of people in a record amount of time.Did it ever occur to you that YOU are the one with a problem and the rest of the world is actually trying to go about its business?Mission Control to Alex: No one cares about your blog ramblings or the incredibly misguided chip on your shoulder with regard to traditional media or marketing communications strategies. You are not the smartest person in the world. You are not even the smartest person on this blog.Get over yourself, try to learn to work with others and move on.PS - Nobody gives a crap about your BMW. They are a dime a dozen and is a symbol of nothing more than your inability to afford anything better.
